OpenLiteSpeed Does It Again: 1.4.17 Retakes the Lead In Serving Small Static Files
Last month, we reported that we improved OpenLiteSpeed’s performance by fixing a bug we discovered thanks to a benchmark posted by Jarrod from rootusers.com.
Since then, an Nginx developer suggested some configuration tuning to make the Nginx results better. We found that some of those configurations are not likely to be used in a production environment. Notably:
- sendfile was turned off
- etag header was turned off
Our internal evaluation confirmed that Nginx was indeed faster with its benchmark-tuned configuration. That said, should these kinds of configurations be used in a production server?

Of Benchmarks and Bug Fixes: OpenLiteSpeed Gets Even Faster!
A few weeks back, Jarrod from rootusers.com posted a benchmark that demonstrated that when handling small static files, Nginx outperformed our OpenLiteSpeed Web Server, particularly during the 1 and 2 CPU Core tests. We decided to dig deeper and investigate these results. -
PHP 7 vs HHVM Benchmark Series 2: WordPress
Based on the results of the Hello World Benchmark Test, we now know that LiteSpeed and OpenLiteSpeed have the smallest IPC overhead and provides the best performance for PHP 7 and HHVM of the web servers tested. We will be using OpenLiteSpeed to do the 2nd benchmark test where we will be targeting a sample WordPress site to see the performance difference. We know from our first test that PHP 7 is 140% faster than HHVM on hello world. How about when using WordPress?

PHP7 vs HHVM Benchmark Series 1: Hello World
What is the best platform for the fastest PHP engines?The competition between PHP 7 and HHVM is starting to heat up. HHVM was previously the front runner, originally converting PHP code to C++ but eventually changing their strategy by instead converting to x86-64 machine code to dramatically increase a PHP site’s performance. PHP however is trying very hard to come out on top with the coming release of PHP 7. Who will win this competition, PHP 7 or HHVM?

Pioneering HTTP/2
At LiteSpeed Technologies we are always striving to incorporate the newest and best cutting-edge technologies into our family of web servers. This of course extends to the new HTTP/2 network protocol standard (published May 2015). We are proud to have been ahead of the curve in this by providing HTTP/2 support as early as January 23rd for OpenLiteSpeed and April 17th for our Enterprise edition. Apache does not yet have a production quality HTTP/2 module while NGINX’s HTTP/2 support will not be available in 2015.
